Sometimes I forget the fact that one of the reasons why blogs get popular is because they are quick and on-the-spot.
My blog, apparently, doesn't follow that.
I'm doing something a little different today.

Today I went to the Made in Melbourne fashion show (mainly to see Neo-Dia, designed by Becky Chua and Gavin Lowes who are so talented. Becky lent us her beautiful designs in my previous shoot for KNEON Issue #1, go see pg. 78 onwards)

So dazzled with the color palettes and styling, my mind was brought to this.
It reminds me very much of another illustration I did before on Comme des Garcons.

Some polaroids I took on my last shoot with the talented stylist Ricky James Flynn.
Really love his styling.
The people I met this time are very bright people.
Was so fun working with them.

Polaroids are amazing things but so expensive.
I find it very hard to be sustainable using them.

Also wish I had free access to studios =(

Hi everyone, how have you been?
I know that I haven't posted an illustration for a long time.
Hope you like this one.

It's inspired by all those beautiful things you see during Melbourne Cup.

Here are some pictures I took last year with my Pentax P30.
As seen, I'm not very good at using it.
Only worked with 3 rolls of film and it's somewhere hidden now.

[Behind the Shoot] KNEON Issue #1

Hi everyone!

I sure have been away for long!
Just came back from my vacation that turned out not so much like a vacation.
There was just so much to do and things are piling up even more as uni just started.

Thanks to all who have been looking at this blog while I was away.

Good news, my photos have been published in the first issue of KNEON!

I found the pictures in there very beautiful and styling great too.
Quite amazed at how Victoire (editor of KNEON) can do styling, photography, and most likely negotiating + convincing with oh so many people by herself!
Anyway, we're on page 78 onwards.
The instaxes (I don't called them Polaroids because they're actually from Fuji; but I still busted tons of money on Polaroids on Ebay and Impossible Project.) up there were taken during the day of the shoot.

There are so many talented people I really want to thank: Becky, the designer who came up with all those beautiful and definitely unique designs and also helping out so much before and after; Raeoni, a very dedicated makeup artist who did the splendid makeup for the girls; Rachel for styling so carefully and giving so many ideas during shoot; Airdrie from Joolz for lending the accessories; and last, but not least, Claire and Courtenay from Maverick Model Management who are not just beautiful, but also so good at what they're doing. Oh, don't forget about their manager who was nice enough to give me a chance to work with the girls.
Wouldn't have happened without anyone of them =)

I will be going to Shanghai for the next two weeks for vacation and of course, EXPO 2010!
(Although I heard that it is so hot and crowded there it becomes quite scary)

Hi everyone!

I'm finally done with exams!!!!!!!!!!

But that doesn't mean I'll have a lot of time,
although I do have a little more time. ?
Will draw up something this weekend.

But first, the shoot I did with my university classmate last year.
He's also in a band called Death Valley Mustangs.
They're pretty cool so go check them out!

I like this shoot quite a lot.
Occasionally, I get to spot model-like stylish guys like him at university.
Maybe I should come up with a project like "Stylish University Boys" or something.
Should be quite different from the fashion and model shoots I've been doing lately.

Totally love that editorial.
So many things in our days have been all about minimalism and simplicity, we sort of forget about the wonders of exaggeration and glamor.
Complicated can be just as nice as simple.

Hey everyone!

It's Wednesday again!
Had a great night with great food but have to get back to studies.
It's so hard to concentrate!

The sketch (more like lineart) is about Chanel tattoos and the very beautiful skirt from Givenchy.
I like to put the tattoos to live.
Having the bird hold your really long bracelet should be dreamy.
The skirt is a little different from the original though so that's why I put "Givenchy inspired skirt"in the title.
Guess sometimes a little imagination works well too.

Hey everyone!

How was your week?
I'm done with most of my assignments.
Now I'm left with exam studies.

The above illustration is something out of a collaboration with Kiyo from Tokyo Identity.
I really like her blog on Tokyo art, fashion and lifestyle, especially the ones on Japan Fashion Week (SHINMAI Creator's Project, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).
You should really check them out if you are interested in Japanese art and culture.

Anyway, I decided to draw something that represents Tokyo Identity.
The background is inspired by Cat Street, a quiet area contrasting the busy streets of Shibuya, which is also one of Kiyo's favorite dwelling places.
Some outfits are from her favorite labels like CA4LA, mintdesigns and matohu whereas others are from IN-PROCESS, fur fur and Comme des Garcons.

This collaboration was very fun and I had a great time finishing it despite having large workload at that time.
Thanks Kiyo for collaborating!

By the way, here are some instax and a behind-the-shoot picture from the shoot on Saturday.
It was really fun working with Ryley, Tayla (very sweet and outgoing models), Lyn (stylist who has a clear concept of what she wants), Fliq (hair stylist who is very good at what she's doing, you should see the vintage hairstyles she does!) and Emanuela (young talented make-up artist whom I'm very thankful of for willing to replace our other MUA last minute). Thanks all!

7am in the morning. Had some raspberry cookies for breakfast.
Also had some bread but I didn't take a picture of that.

9am. Decided to have some coffee (I was quite sleepy) at the meeting place (a cafe).

10am. Make-up and hair by Emanuela and Fliq.
Ryley and Tayla had blankets on because it was too cold.

Hello everyone!

I know that I've been very inconsistent with comments lately and I apologize for that.
Got too many stuff in my hands right now but I promise I'll come back to your blogs soon!

Anyway, this is a little sketch I did based on the Looklet style I came up with.
Might put up some colors when I have more time.
Love every single piece in this particular look.
I've added a few extra things like the Shu Uemura lashes, Vivienne Westwood Armour Ring (A classic and my all time favorite) and Random Laboratory Skull Rings (Japanese brand selling lots of cool skull rings)!
I was so addicted to Looklet those few days but decided to stop because addiction is not a good thing.

Hi everyone!
How's your weekend so far?

Have you seen Lanvin's Spring 2010 RTW collection?
I thought it was amazing.
My eyes have been dazzled by its beautiful show.
The bourgeois look is so elegant and I think it's perfect for any formal occasion.
I highly recommend you all to watch the show.

To be honest, I'm not really satisfied with this illustration mainly because the girls have faces that are too skinny.
Maybe next time I'll plump them up a bit to make things more perfect.
Who ever said that skinny is always pretty?

However, I still like the use of gold poster colors in it with the dreamy flower + butterfly theme.
Took me quite some time to finish.
There are some imperfections, but I'd still like to share with you all because I am so in love with the collection.
I hope you do too!

Hi everyone!

How's your week so far?
Mine has been.... quite stressful since I've been meeting lots of problems with assignments.
Don't worry though, I'll figure something out somehow.

By the way, the other day I was strolling around QV and saw this shop called Trimapee.
It's an Australian label by 2 Melbourne designers.
Really like their clean and simple style.
What I like more is the fact that their sleek menswear is just as suitable for women.

The above is a little quick illustration I did on Trimapee's The "Holy" Knits - shirt and scarf.

I have to say that the scarf is very beautiful and I instantly fell in love with it.
It's 5m long and there is so much potential in it.
Imagine how much a stylist can do with it!

I like the hairstyle but I think it tends to make Asians like me look old.
Do you think she's creepy?
I think she looks a little inhuman. (Wait, she is supposed to be because she has no legs!)

But I love the night lights portrayed in Tokyo.
Always imagined them to be quite romantic but it might be quite dangerous at night.
I remember looking for little stalls that sell Ramen or Takoyaki when I was in Tokyo but had no idea where to go :(

Hey everyone!

Just a little something for the week before I post something new this weekend.
A sketch of a "Boyfriend Look".
No, actually in this one the girl stole her boyfriend's stuff, which explains the awkward mismatched over-sized pieces.

I know that it's already unfair that ladies have so many types of fashion, but we always want more.
I really think there should be a label specially for boyfriend looks.
Menswear can be very nice but they never seem to look right on women.
It's hard to find them.

Coco Chanel designed loose clothing so women could be more comfortable.
But now we've seem to be going back to the uncomfortable apparels like tiny T-shirts and tights. (Don't have any problems with tights, but they can be quite uncomfortable)
It's time we remember what Chanel did and make ourselves comfortable but still feminine.

Oh well, just mumbling.

My Saturday has been pretty laid back.
Walked around the city and bought some groceries.

Again, I've used washi like in my other illustration.
I really like the cotton candy like hair in their show.
Last year they had white wigs.

Hello everyone!
Sorry for the late post.
Would like to thank all of you who visited this blog!

Remember on White Day I promised to post an illustration for Black Day (April 14th)?
Well, here it is.

It's a sum of my favorite black pieces from this season.
I'm a great fan of black apparels!
Believe me, I always dress in black from head to toe.

Most clothes drawn here are from Yohji Yamamoto (He is famous for incorporating black in his collections).
Except the one on the far right is from Alexander McQueen and the second one from the left in the back row is from Christian Dior. (Am I bad at guiding?)
Love this sort of (Anna Wintour?) hairstyle by the way.

Why are all the girls wearing glasses?
Well, they are actually IMAX glasses.
I watched Alice in the Wonderland last month in HOYTS and we used these IMAX glasses which I think are quite stylish.
You know, I think it is (was?) a trend in some Asian countries (especially in Korea?)
Can definitely imagine Korean youngsters wearing these even if they're not watching IMAX.

Your comments in the last few posts are very sweet and I enjoyed looking through every single one of them.
I know that I always say thank you in this blog but I think it's rude to not answer comments so here are some answers to questions being asked:

1. I usually scan my pictures on my EPSON scanner.
2. Sometimes I make adjustments (I try to keep it minor, but sometimes I don't) on Photoshop if the colors aren’t right.
3. The photos in [Test Shoot] Matt are taken at National Gallery of Victoria and the Shrine of Remembrance
4. I don’t know if Jade from [Test Shoot] Jade has a blog. Sorry about that....
5. Drawing hands is very difficult and sometimes I just give up on it. The best way, I think, is refer to pictures first. To prevent the hands from looking deformed, draw a frame for the hand (review how-to-draw books). But really, it takes LOTS of practice. Sometimes it's hard to get it even if you have done so for years.

I also received another award from Sniff from IN SNIFF's CHOOS.

Hey everyone!
We know how much we love Miu Miu's S/S collection for this year, but I'm not posting it just yet.
Instead I'm posting their collection from last season since... it's getting colder here in Australia.
The coats in Miu Miu's A/W 2009/10 collection are gorgeous and I would really really love to have them.
A girl/lady can look both classy and cool in them.

Also, let's not forget about the feather mania that occurred last season.

I really like the prints and cutting of this particular coat.
Looks so dynamic and beautiful.
The collar is interesting too.
I guess it creates a more masculine/formal image that contrasts with the funky, animated prints?

Oh, let's not forget about the shoes.
They look fabulous yet comfortable at the same time? Or maybe it's because it has a casual look?
MIGHT draw this into one of my illustrations some time.

Hey everyone.
How is your week so far? Mine was okay.

Here is an illustration I did.
It's mainly featuring the very beautiful Balenciaga jacket from this season.
Many only think of a biker chic/sporty girl wearing this jacket but I think something feminine would work too. That's why I put a lacy dress on her.
There are also some lace and leather mix matching going on too.
I hope you like how I imagined this to be.

Oh, just a little something I'd love to add: I love washi (和紙　Japanese paper), especially the colorful ones like the one in the background.

[Illustration] White Rabbit in the Wonderland

Hello everybody!
It's the weekends again and probably some of you from the States and Canada have started your spring breaks.
I guess most of you have watched "Alice in the Wonderland" by Tim Burton?
It is (was) a really big hit.
I watched it early this week and found the movie quite beautiful. I like how Tim Burton portrays different stories, although I prefer his darker movies like 'The Sleepy Hollow'.

Anyway, here is an illustration I made on Alice in the Wonderland.
She's supposed to be the white rabbit, as some of you can see.
I drew this not really because of the movie, but because I saw these really cool shoes Nicholas Kirkwood designed for the story.

Don't you think it's amazing how his design can be translated in this form?

Let's not forget about the bunny ears from Louis Vuitton A/W 2009/2010 collection.

I really like the idea of a bunny wearing a blue blazer. Wearing a sheer striped top with hot pants during spring/summer must be fun too.

Here's a little sketch I did on 3.1 Philip Lim's Spring 2010 RTW.
I thought that the shiny red texture and color used in the coat is quite clever and bold.
Really like the cutting near the wrist too.

Can you imagine all the attention someone gets when wearing that on the streets?
It's hard not to notice!

[Illustration] Happy White Valentine's

I am not quite sure how many of you celebrate White Valentine's Day (most likely none, since it a very Japanese thing) but here is a quick illustration I did.

I remembered looking at this season's Calvin Klein show and recalled a dress that looked something like the one I drew above. Apparently my memory was not that accurate. The actual piece looks like this:

Nevertheless, I still enjoy the clean and simple look with a touch of elegant cutting. Very suitable on romantic occasions, don't you think?

***Since many people asked about what White Valentine's is, here is a little explaination:

White (Valentine's) Day is celebrated on 14th March every year, mainly in Japan or South Korea. In these areas, Valentine's Day (February 14) is usually when the girls give guys chocolates as an expression of love, courtesy or social obligation. On White (Valentine's) Day, the guys return the favor by giving gifts like chocolates or jewelry.

Apparently there is also Black Day, celebrated on April 14th. Perhaps I should draw something for that day too.

On this day last month, one of my (and perhaps many of yours) favorite designer Alexander McQueen was found dead at home. Here is an illustration of one of his designs from last season.

I've always liked his designs. They are definitely edgy, as many people describe, but still elegant at the same time. I also enjoy his shows very much. There are so many surrealism involved in them, making them very entertaining.

Will never forget him as a highly gifted designer.
Let's look forward to how Gareth Pugh continues the Alexander McQueen label.

I finally got my copy of High Fashion February 2010 issue (Was hesitating if I should invest on it)!

Just had a browse through the magazine and is very happy with what I got. This issue covers most of spring/summer 2010 collections, which will be very useful reference for my following illustrations. So heads up!

Jean Paul Gaultier's collection always have some kind of architectural/geometrical elements in it. Can be rather 3-dimensional too. Despite all that, his designs rarely loses femininity. Hope you like my sketch up there.

An illustration on Shanghai and its very tasty XiaoLongBao (a type of Chinese dumpling)

Really like bright colored QiPaos(Chinese dress). I think they would match well with the Chanel earrings from its Pre-fall 2010 Paris-Shanghai collection. Wouldn't say that the collection was very Shanghainese, but it does have a lot of Chinese elements in it.
